AGARTALA: In the face of discontent among IPFT leaders over cabinet berths in new BJP-IPFT coalition government which would be sworn in two days from now, Assam minister and NEDA chairman Himanta Biswa Sarma today met the indigenous leaders here in an emergency meeting to quell the disaffection following allocation of portfolios.

“Today I met Shri NC Debbarma and all elected MLAs and office-bearers of Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) in Agartala and finalized the architecture of the cooperation between BJP and IPFT for the new government in Tripura”, Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a tweet this afternoon.

IPFT supremo NC Debbarma was seen content, posing for pictures, with Sarma along with other IPFT leaders. BJP vice president Pratima Bhowmik also joined the talks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to join the swearing-in ceremony of all new BJP MLAs at Assam Rifles ground here on March 09.

The regional party bared teeth two days back saying it would not join the ‘treasury benches’ if it was not given ‘respectable representation’ in the new cabinet. Though the party leaders did not demand any berth in particular, several indigenous youth leaders and NGOs were found demanding an indigenous Chief Minister for the state.

Fusing the potential that such demands packed, senior BJP leader and central minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday named BJP state president Biplab Kumar Deb as the next Chief Minister. Senior indigenous leader and member of Tripura royal family Jishnu Devvarma was named as Deputy CM. Devvarma is yet to win in an assembly seat as Charilam constituency, where he was slated to contest from, had polling countermanded after Left Front candidate Ramendra Narayan Debbarma expired of cardiac arrest one week before polls. The seat would now go to polls on March 12.

IPFT general secretary Mevar Kumar Jamatia was not available for his comments. However, it is learnt that the discussion with Himanta today involved talks on cabinet berth distribution and that both parties emerged satisfied.
