The Returning Officer of Dhalai district in Tripura, Vikas Singh today issued a notice to East Tripura BJP candidate Rebati Tripura for exceeding the limit of expenditure for the Lok Sabha Campaign by almost 20 lakhs. The limit for expenses pertaining to Lok sabha campaign for each candidate has been set at 70 lakhs.
The RO while speaking to TNT- The Northeast Today confirmed that a notice has been issued to the BJP MP candidate for exceeding the limit of expences for his campaign. He stated,” Yes, a notice has been issued to him for exceeding the limit for expenses but we have not received any reply from his end yet.”
BJP, however has claimed that there has been a misunderstanding on the part of the RO as every RO sets the limit according to their assessment, the party spokesperson Ashok Sinha said,” We have received the notice for exceeding the election expenses by almost 20 lakhs and we will clear out the misunderstanding by the administration. Moreover it is to be noted that whenever the Prime Minister Narendra Modi comes for campaigning for any candidate in the state, the expences of his tour has to be incurred by the candidate”.
Reacting to this, Congress has accused BJP of using illegal money to influence voters. The Congress spokesperson said,” We have been informing authorities at different levels that BJP has been spending huge amount of money to influence voters. The same tactics was used by them during the last assembly elections.BJP does not have any ideology. The Congress party and CPI (M) has fought for decades in the state based on their ideology. But BJP lacks integrity, ideology or issues and the only thing they have is money power which they spend in two ways– One through the govt. administration and the other by the party itself. We demand immediate cancellation of candidature of Rebati Tripura for violating the Model Code of Conduct of the Election Commission” said Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Vice President Tapas Dey.
He further added, ” We also demand removal of Biplab Kumar Deb from the post of Chief Minister as under his regime the elections for West Tripura Lok Sabha seat was massively rigged which has removed the faith of elections among the citizens of the state. Biplab Kumar Deb and the ADG Rajiv Singh (who was removed by the EC for his misconduct during the West Tripura elections) have allowed BJP hooligans to spread violence across the state which started right before the night of polling. Rajiv Singh in the past also had a tainted record for his lineage towards BJP.”
CPI (M) leaders were unavailable for comments.
