Serious differences between BJP and IPFT, its partner in the state government have created tension in mixed population areas across the state in the past few days.

In yet another similar instance, a clash erupted between the allies’ supporters today at Mainama that falls under Chailengta Police Station. As per a resident of the area, the IPFT supporters had called for a Chakka jam in the area during the course of which a commotion erupted between the supporters of IPFT and BJP.

Speaking to TNT- The Northeast Today over the phone, IPFT worker present on site, Uaingsohroy Reang said, “We want a peaceful solution to the problems of the indigenous people. Last Sunday, our central members and divisional plus regional members urged for the formation of primary committee of IPFT at the  Chailengta sub division. During this time, we were intimidated by the supporters of the other party after which a hostile situation arose. This escalated to some form of violence leading to destruction of property. So, in order to demand a peaceful solution, we decided to hold a peaceful march as well as a road blockade today in this area. We demanded that the present MLA should address to our grievances and find amicable solutions to problems. While we waited for him, some of his associate members arrived after which we had a meeting with them for around 30 minutes today after which we lifted our bloackade”

He also went on to state that, “While some our party workers were returning home, they were attacked on the way leading to 9 workers being injured. They have been admitted to GB hospital. We have again declared a blockade in the area and will only lift it when the CM himself assures us of some concrete solutions to our problems. ”

As many as 11 incidents of violence between BJP and IPFT supporters have been reported from Khowai, Jirania, Korbok and Shantirbazar subdivisions in the last two weeks.

Tripura: CPI(M), Cong asked to vacate over 100 party offices built on govt land

              Agartala | May 7, 2018

A day after, several political parties of Tripura criticized the reported proposal of a government committee to replace Kokborok, the language of indigenous people of the state, with Hindi in local television news bulletins and demanded its immediate rollback, the BJP administration in Tripura has asked the CPI(M) and Congress to vacate over 100 party offices built on government land or face eviction if they fail to do so.

As per police sources, few party offices were bulldozed at Old Motor Stand in Agartala on Monday, soon after a notice was issued in this regard. While the two opposition parties did not deny the government’s claim, they objected to the manner in which the operation was being carried out.

“It’s true that these structures were built on government land many years ago, but the decision to demolish them is with the intention of suppressing opposition activities in the state. We want the government to withdraw its decision,” said CPI(M) state secretary Bijan Dhar to Hindustan Times, adding that deadlines for vacating party offices vary from place to place.

The Congress, for its part, plans to protest against the government’s decision at Agartala on May 17.
“As many as 35 of our offices received notices from the government. While it is true that many of them were built on government land, the administration has served the notices without calling an all-party meeting,” said party president Birajit Sinha to Hindustan Times.

West district magistrate Dr Ramteke has directed that party offices in his jurisdiction be vacated by May 6. “If it is not done by that time, the administration will take the help of the police and – if required – paramilitary forces to demolish the offices from May 7. We will not be responsible for the destruction of any property kept in those structures once the deadline has lapsed,” he said.
