Tripura: CPM observes Lenin’s birth anniversary 3 km away from statue demolition site

    By Our Correspondent

Agartala, April 23, 2018: One month after Communist hero V.I Lenin’s 25 ft astute statue was demolished at College Square in Belonia sub-division, Tripura’s opposition CPIM yesterday observed his 149th birth anniversary at the party’s South Tripura district committee office, 3 Km away from the site where the statue used to stand.

Addressing a small event at the party office, South Tripura district committee member Trilokesh Sinha said Lenin’s statues could be demolished but his ideology could not be erased. He said that his party would continue to struggle to revive from the poll debacle.

CPM and its Left Front allies – Forward Bloc, Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), CPI faced a massive defeat in Feb 18 assembly polls this year and were reduced from 51 seats in the previous assembly to 16 seats in the current one.

Meanwhile, CPM observed central event of Lenin’s birth anniversary at Bhanu Ghosh Smriti Bhavan, which is the party’s West Tripura district office. Party leader Samit Chakraborty said that attacks on left supporters were at the highest now, even worse than Congress-TUJS regime which unseated the second Left Front government led by former chief minister Late Nripen Chakraborty in 1988.

He added that his party would try to ‘learn’ from mistakes committed in the past and revive with peoples’ support ahead.

Tripura: 20 years after murder of 4 RSS workers, BJP led government to reopen case

      April 23, 2018

AGARTALA: Nearly 20 years after four RSS pracharaks were allegedly killed by National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), the BJP-led Tripura government has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to reopen the case.

“We sensed a conspiracy behind the incident and constituted an SIT, headed by inspector Kamalendu Bhowmik – who is well-acquainted with the case – to re-investigate the case,” chief minister Biplab Deb told TOI on Sunday.

This comes weeks after the state government ordered a fresh probe into the killing of Congress panchayat chief Atish Choudhury, stabbed to death in 1993. Congress leaders had claimed CPM cadres were involved in the murder but the case had made no headway then.

In the pracharaks’ murder case, RSS had raised the demand for an independent inquiry several times but the state government, with the Left Front at the helm, had not acceded to the demand.

The four workers – Shayamal Sengupta (zonal general secretary of West Bengal, Assam and the northeast), Sudhamay Dutta (area in charge of Agartala), Dinendra Nath Dey (a pracharak working in southern Assam) and Shubhankar Chakraborty (district pracharak) – were abducted by NLFT in August 1999.
