The hearing of the highly awaited 10,323 teacher’s termination case has taken a new turn with the Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi deciding to preside over the two judge bench which is currently hearing the case making the bench a three judge bench. The other two sitting judges of the three judge bench are Justice Udai Umesh Lalit and Justice D.Y.Chandrachud. The next hearing date given by the Supreme Court is November 1, 2018.
It may be mentioned that many such dates were earlier set and were postponed on one ground or another. Initially the case hearing was scheduled for September 17 but it was deferred to October 24. The division bench on October 24 again postponed the case to November 1st for next hearing.
The Supreme Court in a judgement on March 29 last year upheld the state High Court verdict of terminating 10,323 jobs due to irregularities found in their recruitment procedure. Later the previous CPI(M) government in May last year announced 12000 non-teaching education staff posts to bypass the apex court’s order. But the government’s decision was challenged.
The Chief Justice himself had opted to preside over the bench, possibly considering the gravity of the case and the possible impact of the final judicial verdict on the state and its people though there was no plea for an extended bench filed by the state government .
