AGARTALA | April 17, 2019:
In an incident that took place on Saturday, an altercation over which party to support in the Lok Sabha election resulted in the death of three men including a women in Tripura’s Dhalai district in Manikpur village, police said.
The deceased persons were identified as Subal Kanti Chakma, 65, Kinachand Chakma, 45, and Hembati Tripura, 39 — were attacked with sharp-edged weapons. Two others, Murucherra Chakma and Gunodhar Chakma, sustained injuries in the attack. They have been shifted to hospital.
Police said some people, who were under the influence of alcohol, got into an election debate, which turned violent after some time. Chhabikanta Chakma, a juvenile, has been arrested in connection with the killings, which took place when the Chakmas were celebrating the Biju festival.
Both Congress and BJP have blamed each other for the incident.
As per police, when the quarrel over supporting BJP or Congress in the East Tripura seat broke out, Chhabikanta suddenly got agitated and attacked others with a sharp-edged weapon.
The villagers, later overpowered the accused and handed him over to police. The bodies have been handed over to their families after postmortem. Police said an investigation was on.
