A fifty-eight year old contractor was arrested from Teliamura in Khowai district, 60 Km from here, for allegedly raping a fourteen year old for at least eleven times since February this year.
Speaking to this correspondent, Superintendent of Police (Khowai) Krishnendu Chakravertty said that the complaint was filed by a minor who claimed herself to have been violated by the accused several times since February.
“We received a complaint from the victim, who fled from her residence at Teliamura last evening. She took refuge to her relatives at Bishalgarh, who took her to the local police station. A complaint was lodged there and she was transferred for verifying her allegation at Teliamura. We arrested the accused at 4 AM last night”, the SP said.
Ghosh, who was also learnt to be a state leader of Akhil Bharat Akhanda Vikas Parishad, a Hindu nationalist social organization, was arrested from his house at Champlai area in Krishnapur ADC village, 4 Km from Teliamura township, at 4 AM this morning. He was produced before a local court and charged with rape, criminal intimidation and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO) Act. He was sent to police custody for three days.
CPM Teliamura sub-divisional committee secretary Subir Sen alleged that the arrestee is also a leader of the Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
However, VHP state organizational secretary Amal Chakraborty claimed Manoj Ghosh has got no relation with his organization. “We do not have any liability for his actions”, he added.
Pradesh Congress vice president Tapas De condemned the incident and said exemplary punishment should be given to the accused if he is proven guilty during trial.
The union cabinet today decided to award death penalty to minor rape accused persons as maximum punishment.
