The ruling BJP’s ally IPFT is seemingly upset over certain proposals of the central cabinet on the amendment of Article 280 and 6th schedule of the constitution to further empower the TTAADC.
The IPFT has opposed the foreseen cutback in the number of seats of ADC. Currently there are twenty eight elective seats and two nominated seats for women in the ADC but as per the Centre’s proposal, two more women members will have to be nominated.
Mangal Debbarma, IPFT spokesperson said that if the total number of elective seats are not increased it will go down to 26 instead of the present 28 so this has to be changed.
He furthur claimed that there is no clear-cut decision in the Centre’s proposal as to which departments are to be transferred to ADC. There is also no concrete proposal in Centre’s amendment of the idea about direct funding of ADC.
Apart from this, IPFT has also expressed desire to alter the proposed nomenclature of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous Council changed into Tipra Autonomous Territorial Council as there is no equivalent word for ‘Tripura’ in ‘Kokborok’ language.
Mangal further added that they will not accept the central cabinet’s amendment unless these matters were reconsidered including the demand for inclusion of ‘Kokborok’ in the 8th schedule of the constitution.
It may be recalled that on January 23, the Union Cabinet approves landmark Constitutional amendment to increase financial resources and other powers of Autonomous Councils in the Sixth Schedule areas of North East India.
