Three youth along with a police officer sustained injuries after being attacked by villagers suspecting the youth to be drug peddlers. The incident took place on Saturday at Binoy Chowdhury Para village under Kalyanpur police station.
Police sources informed that a group of villagers abruptly stopped a Maruti Alto car on Saturday afternoon and began rummaging inside the vehicle suspecting to find drug consignments.
The two persons present in the car have been identified as Jayanta Debroy and Partha Deb. While the villagers were searching the car, a known drug peddler of that locality (as per villager’s account) Animesh Debbarma reportedly rushed to the spot to rescue his friends. Later, as the situation continued to spiral out of control, the police was informed and the police forces rushed to the spot. The team was led by OC of Kalyanpur police station, Santosh Shil.
They tried to rescue the youths from the hands aggressive villagers but the villagers started pelting stones targeting the police forces. This resulted in OC Santosh Shil sustaining injuries in the head.
Later, police had to resort to mild lathi charge to disperse the angry mob.Thereafter the police immediately shifted the injured OC along with the three drug peddlers to Khowai hospital for primary treatment. Partha Deb, one of the injured youth, due to his critical condition was referred at GB Hospital.
Police later informed that no incriminating substance or any drug related items were recovered from the possession of three suspected drug peddlers or from their vehicles.
Additional forces have been deployed in the locality to control the situation.
