Residents on the banks of Howrah river at Pratapgarh area in West Tripura today received an eviction notice from the office of Deputy Collector & Magistrate, Agartala East Revenue Circle. Around 38 families have received this eviction notice and the remaining families of around 200 will soon be delivered with the notices within the next few days.
The East Agartala administration wants to carry out embankment work at the banks of Howrah river to avoid any untoward situation during rainy season. So, the administration has asked all the illegal occupants residing there to evacuate the area within next 7 days or else they would be evicted from the land by the administration. The eviction notice is dated May 3rd 2018.
All the residents are worried about their future as most of them have no other residential alternative.
“Where will we go overnight with our families. The government has not even made any alternative arrangements for us”, said a local resident who was also served the notice.
After getting the information, MLA Ashish Kumar Saha visited the area and took stock of the situation while with the horrified residents and assured them that he will look into the matter.
“It is fact that the administration has asked them to vacate their homes as they have been illegally occupying government land and the administration wants this entire area to carry out embankment work which was destroyed during last year floods. But where will these poor people go? They are staying in this area for the last 35-40 years. I have already discussed the issue with the SDM and he has assured me to look into the matter. I will also talk with the concerned Minister and the District Magistrate and will try to provide them an alternative residing option”, said MLA, Ashish Kumar Saha while speaking to TNT- The Northeast Today over phone.
