11 days after the unprovoked firing incident in West Tripura by security personnel that left 6 unarmed protesters seriously injured, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb today visited Dasarambari, Madhabbari and Jirania areas to take stock of the situation.

However, the CM was greeted with strong resentment from angry public upon his visit to Dasarambari area where part of the statue of Maharaj Bir Bikram Manikya was destroyed by the bullet shot by security personnel.

The statue of Maharaj Bir Bikram Manikya was seemingly covered with a black plastic sheet to display anger and to condemn the shameful incident.

However, the statue was later uncovered amidst high security.

It may be mentioned that the CM has announced a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh for the families of the injured protestors today.

Prior to the CM’s announcement, Tripura royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma took stock of the situation and also provided financial aid to the affected people while expressing concern at the deterioration law and order situation. He had also appealed to the public to not fall prey to communal divide and rule policy that was being attempted to create in the state after such incidents.

Condemning the incident, he had said, ” There is full video evidence that there was use of excessive force by TSR. Even the statue of Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya was attacked causing the a part of it to be broken. There is a bullet mark at the statue’s head. I do not think that the protesters had guns to shoot at the statue or at anybody else for that matter”.
