The Twipra Students Federation, Shillong unit has sought for new hostels for the Tripura-based students studying in the capital city of Meghalaya.
In a letter to Tripura Tribal Welfare minister – MK Jamatia, the TSF mentioned about the necessity of affordable accommodation for the students who go to Shillong for higher studies.
Majority of the students are socio-economically poor, at times, financial constraints have forced them to leave their education mid-way.
‘There are certain cases where students could not pay the house-rent,’ as stated in the letter.
They demanded for construction of a boys’ hostel at Mawblei on the 33,685 sq feet land facilitated with auditorium hall, cook, security guards, warden and also bus service.
The land was given on lease by one Jemnud Pyngrope to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) in 1992.
Their demands also included of making another hostel for girls at Laitumkhrah permanent. This hostel is temporarily funded by TTAADC.
